Lunch

A few weeks ago the podcast Podictionary aired an episode that featured the word lunch. This was a word suggested by my son.

One day he asked me why the word breakfast was what it was. I was able to answer that one. It is the time you break the fast that you had been on all night. Interestingly, the word in Spanish has exactly the same meaning. Desayunar is the infinitive. Ayunar is to fast. Des would be the breaking, or not continuing the fast.

He then asked me about lunch. I had no answer to that. I told him I would ask the Podictionary host about doing an episode on it, and he did.

If you like words and their origins, Podictionary is a great podcast for you.

Alexandra is back

One of the podcasts I have enjoyed is the Chess is Cool podcast hosted by Alexandra Kosteniuk. She has been on a break way too long. But just last week she released a new episode. In it she talked about a new video podcast that she is now doing. It is called Chess Killer Tips.

Chess Killer Tips logoWhile I really don’t watch many video podcasts, this one appeals to me. She is planning to keep the shows short (1 to 3 minutes). It is also much easier to follow chess moves when you can see them as opposed to just hearing the positions read.

If you are into chess at all, then Alexandra has some great tips. She obviously knows what she is talking about since she has been a Grand Master since the age of 14 and is currently ranked #6 in the world for women. Much of her stuff is understandable by the common man. But, some of it is pretty advanced and it takes me much longer to think through it than she gives me time for. With the video podcast it is pretty easy to pause and see the moves as they happen.

I have only watched a couple of episodes so far. She is planning to put a new one out several times a week. I think this is a great tool for anyone wanting to improve their chess skills.

My Thought Spot 11: Crossing Borders on the Run

Much to the chagrin of my wife and probably my mother, here is another running episode of MTS Podcast. When I got home from my run the other day and I had my recorder in hand, my wife groaned and said “you didn’t record while running again did you?” Yup.

No detailed show notes. The blog postings from the last week are what is included here. If I get a chance when I get home I may add links. I am just trying to get this uploaded before I cross the border headed back to Yucatán in a couple of hours.

Strange download numbers

The My Thought Spot podcast is not a runaway hit since there is really no target market. Today I noticed something strange with the numbers.

Download stats

The number to the right is the total downloads number. Notice the highest number of downloads is the very first one. That makes sense. People have had more time to listen to it. Episode 5 plummeted. Strange. I thought maybe there was just a stat error in my server logs, but that number is consistent with the episodes after 6.

Episode 6 is the one where I recorded while running. My mom said she had trouble listening to it because she kept trying to breathe for me. My wife thought it was novel, but suggested I don’t do it again.

So the episode that has gotten the most critical comments is the one that has been downloaded more than the others around it. Maybe I will have to do another running one to see how it works out. Don’t worry Mom, I will try to warn you so you can have your oxygen tank handy.

My Thought Spot 10: Traveling Wonders

I got up early to record before the kids got up. But with trying to get everything together they were up and interested in the recording process before I got it done. So you will hear some extra noise (besides the birds) in the background. The rest of the noise has been edited out.

It was good to get a review of the show this week. That is what prompted me to try and get one out before we leave on our next trip. We should have left this morning, but car problems delayed us. So I am using the time the car is in the shop to put this together. Enjoy!
