Missionary Talks 40: Larry Franklin

This was a very enjoyable interview. I was attending a three day seminar that the Franklins were teaching. Their subject was on how to teach children’s Sunday School classes. It was informative. Much of the stuff I already knew from my years of experience and having taken classes such as this before. What I liked about their presentation is that it was very much based on a clear philosophy.

I had hoped to get my William Carey biography done this week. I did finish writing the script, but ended up with a cold this weekend. I was planning to record on Sunday night. Since my voice does not sound the best right now, I will hold it till next week. It will end up being two parts about 15 minutes each. It was not as easy to write and the David Livingstone one, but will be easier to record. There are no big quotes in this one, therefore I will be doing all the reading myself.

Someone plunged out my eardrums

Today I was reading Gordon’s blog and he posted about walking away from his notebook computer but having forgotten that his headphones were on and plugged into the computer. It damaged the headphone jack. That reminded me of something that happened to me a couple of years ago.

I have a set of earbuds that are like foam ear plugs. You squeeze them down and plug them into your head. As they expand they completely block out environmental noise. Then when you turn on your podcast player you have to make sure you turn the volume down really low, or you will blow out your ears.

One day I was wearing them while mowing the lawn. It is nice because they protect your ears from the lawnmower noise and you can still hear your podcast without turning the volume up too much. Like all life changing events, you tend to remember strange details. I was listening to Tom, Molly and Veronica from Buzz Out Loud as they discussed the Akismet spam blocker for Molly’s WordPress blog.

I caught the headphone chord with my hand and violently ripped the earbuds from my head. The way it happened though, I was instantly aware of the result but not the cause. The result was that all of a sudden my ears felt like someone used plungers to pop out my ear drums. I could no longer hear the podcast and this awful noise (lawnmower) was filling my head. I just knew my ears exploded for some un-explainable reason. It took a couple of seconds before I realized that I simply pulled on the chord wrong.

Scary times.

Missionary Talks 39: Brenda Edwards

Two weeks ago when I was on my trip to Tampico I got a chance to interview Richard and Brenda Edwards. They are a couple who spent a few years in Kenya as missionaries. In this episode, Brenda tells us about taking her children to Africa and some concerns she had as a mother. She also talks about shopping frustrations.

While recording we were in competition with a dog barking in the house. I tried to eliminate those sections as much as possible, but you can probably still pick out the dog in some places. There are also some random traffic noises. But, I think it is clear enough.

I am still working on the William Carey script. I have had some computer problems on the machine that I was writing on. I will have to move that info onto my main machine and try to get that knocked out this week. I will be recording the William Carey bio on my new microphone. I hope to get a good clean recording to work with. With just a little bit of money I have been able to clean up the sound in my recordings. It won’t affect the next couple of interviews for Missionary Talks, but you will be able to hear it in the next episode of My Thought Spot, which I am editing now.

Missionary Talks 38: Richard Edwards

When I was away on my trip last week I was able to get two interviews. The first was with Pastor Richard Edwards and the second was his wife Brenda. I enjoyed talking with each of them.

With Bro. Edwards I tried to focus the interview on what he as a pastor learned from being a missionary that now helps him treat missionaries differently. Though that is not the way the interview turned out, I still think he had some great insight into relationships between the pastor and missionary. My interview with his wife should be out in about a week. Whereas Richard’s interview was fairly easy to edit, Brenda’s will not be. We talked for well over 30 minutes, and while I enjoyed our conversation, we really rambled a lot. That means I will have a lot of editing to do. I think that comes from trying to do two interviews back to back. The first one I was focused but the second one I started to relax too much.

We were together for a special week of meetings in Tampico. They were a great couple to get to know and I look forward to possibly spending time with them in the future.

Missionary Talks: Listener Feedback 03

Yesterday I put together a quick episode of Missionary Talks which contains some feedback and information about what I have planned in some upcoming episodes.

I am working on a biography episode of William Carey. I will be snagging at least one interview in the morning. Through my work on William Carey I have become interested in contacting my missionary friend in India to do an interview with him. I am also going to be traveling in 2 weeks and might be able to grab one more interview while I am away.

Just because I have not put out much this last month does not mean that I am going away.
