Running and commercials

I did not find any commercials to view yet from the Super Bowl, but I am sure they are waiting for me to discover them.

I have not reported on my running much recently. I have a short run planned for tomorrow. Probably will run 3-5 miles. I have not yet decided. Since I am not really training for anything, I am just running 3-5 days a week whatever distance I feel like.

I looked on my running log today and saw that I have run 32 miles this year and have 313 miles on my shoes. I wished I could get shoes in my size here. I would just buy shoes on the Internet, but since I am new to this, I don’t have a shoe that I am confident with. My current shoes are ok, but not as comfy as my last ones. I want to try shoes on before buying. Which means, I may have to wait until this summer. They stop a half size too small for being big “enough,” but I would like them to be a half size larger than that. I may buy new shoes in the same model I have now just because I know they wont kill me. Though I have never really liked these shoes.

Podcasts:
I have been listening to Planet3rry’s podcast Gravity @ 1053 today. I thought I was subscribed to it, but apparently not. He keeps mentioning on his blog that he has an episode about ready to go out. But, I never catch when one is actually posted. So I was not aware that he was really producing. Anyway, I am catching up. I have heard 3 today and my ears are not bleeding yet.

Time to vote. A new month is upon us. If you have voted for my podcast during the month of January, you need to vote again in February at Podcast Alley. This is a monthly voting process. You do have to give your email address, but I have not gotten any spam from them yet. Voting each month is kind of a drag, but it at least gives a podcaster an idea of how many are active listeners and it is kinda fun to watch the numbers. Looks like my show will end up in 37th place in the Religion & Spirituality category. That is about where I was for the month of December.

Also, there is Digg. At Digg you don’t have to vote every month. That is nice for the voters, but not so much for the podcasters. This means that once you get your main listeners to digg you, you have little chance of moving up in the standings. It really is just a matter of how many listeners you have. Not how many are rabid fans.

I am trying to promote my podcast as much as possible. If anyone could mention my show at your blog, that would be a great help. Especially if your blog might have religious type readers.

Running:
Yesterday I took my son out for a nice long run. He was doing great after 25 minutes (which was our goal), so I pushed him a bit further. He ran for 40 minutes and covered 5.05 Km. That is not a blazing pace, but it is the first time he has covered that distance. We had previously just been working on moving along consistently (at a higher pace), yesterday I was interested in starting to work up his distance. I did not expect to be able to run that far. He did very well. He may be running his first 5K race sooner than expected.

Blogging:
I wanted to have a post every day this month. I missed 2 days somehow. But, there are some days where I had more than one post, so I made up for the misses. I don’t really have a goal to blog every day, it just worked out that way this month. Maybe it will continue.

Thanks for helping me have a good start to the new year. Send people this way to see what is going on.

5K Training

Today marked the first day of my son’s 5K training. He mentioned several weeks ago that he would like to run a 5K race. This was mentioned as he was getting ready for a 2 week trip. So, I decided to wait until he got back before starting on this.

Yesterday I mentioned to him that we were going to start today because he had said he wanted to do a 5K race.

He said, “I said that I wanted to do a 5K race?”

“Yes, son, you said that”

He replied very dryly, “I need to think a little harder about what I say.”

I held him to it. Today he ran 1.25 miles. Not bad for not having run in a few months. He was tired at the end, but our pace was so slow, he certainly was not winded. His time was just over a 12 min/mile average. We can get that down a little. We could be looking at a 35-38 minute 5K. I think that would be a very good goal. He just turned 9 years old.

I am not sure when his debut will be. It will be several weeks from now. Probably towards the end of March.

Running again

Whew! I have not run in about 10 days. This is not a good pattern to keep my mileage up. Last month I had to take several days off too. Fortunately none of this was caused by injury. I should be back into the grind for a while now.

I ran a 5K in over 31 minutes today. It ended up being a 10+ minute per mile pace which is actually good for me right now. I did not want to push it too fast today, so I just enjoyed the run. I will work on speeding up over the next couple of weeks.

I plan 3 more miles tomorrow and then a 6 mile run on Saturday. That will get my miles up to 25 (or so) for the year. This should have been closer to 50 or 60 miles, but at least I am going forward.

My brother recently commented to my mom that he thought I had joined a running cult. Well, to put his mind at rest, the cult leaders around here won’t let me in until I start logging 80 to 100 miles a month. So I still have a ways to go to get through the initiation process.

1000 miles in 2007

Not for me. I know that Adam at Burning 20 is going for the 1000 mile mark. I might get there, but I have finally come to a conclusion that that is not a goal for me. I had mentioned earlier that I wanted to set a goal for my running in 2007, but I had not come to a decision on it yet.

I have decided that I will have as a mileage goal 750 miles. I ran just under 600 last year (my first year as a runner). I also want to work on my 5K time. I currently have a PR of 26:50. Realistic goal is 24:00, but I would like to get down to 22:00 by the end of the year. I also plan to run 2 half marathons for a PR (though probably not in an organized road race). Finally, I would like to do a 20 mile long run at least once during the year. It is likely that I will run close to the 1000 mile mark this year, but my focus will be the distance goals and 5K speed.

There! I have set my running goals finally. Now I just need to get out and run.
