March Running Summary

I have not done a running summary in a couple of months. Mainly that is due to the fact that I ran, but had no big goals nor breakthroughs. March was a bit different however, therefore I am interested in a summary. You can always see my running progress at my running log. Sometimes I don’t always update it daily, but almost always on a weekly basis. Especially if I am traveling, I don’t always keep it updated daily.

I have run 124 miles so far this year. The month of March was 60 of those miles. Now you can see why I am a bit more excited about March. I ran as many miles that month as I did the two previous months combined. And, 22 of those 60 miles were in the last 7 days.

I ran 1 race. It was a 10K.

The week I ran 20+ miles was fun in that I got to run twice a day for a couple of those days. I also got to run with other people. Previous to that week, with the exception of races, I had only logged 4 miles while running with someone else. And that was over a year ago. It was enjoyable to hit the road with other people and get a chance to talk. We went at a much slower pace. It made me feel good to be the fastest runner in the group.

It was a good month for running. I just crossed over the 400 mile mark on my “new” shoes. I have logged more than 700 miles total since starting to run. I am not sure what I am going to do about shoes yet.

I had a brilliant idea on the shoe situation this last week, but I thought about it too late. I was surrounded by people who had nice shoes. I started asking around to see if anyone had my size and to see if they would sell me their shoes if they were in good shape. I could not find any shoes that fit the bill. Maybe if I had started earlier in the week then I would have found what I was looking for.

Have I ever explained the shoe situation? Fodder for a later post I guess.

Day 3

I was hoping to get new pictures and a bit of a podcast out. That probably won’t happen until the weekend. I have been having too much fun with real people to spend time on the Internet playing with media.

Yesterday we saw 150 (or so) patients. We have seen between 500 and 600 patients in the 3 days so far. We have exact numbers, but I have not seen those numbers yet. We have also been able to share the message of salvation with almost all of them. There have been 88 who have accepted the Lord as their Savior via the main evangelist in the group. That does not count those who have come to the Lord by way of the doctors and med students. I know of 7, but there may be many more.

We still have today and a half day tomorrow.

I have had a blast running the last week. I have been able to run twice a day since I have been here. The people on the trip are either mid-20’s medical students or health conscious doctors. There are several runners. I have gotten to run with different ones through the week. Previous to this week I have run only 4 miles out of the 700+ miles I have logged while running with someone else. This has been fun.

Carrera de los Amigos

Today I got to run a 10K (6.2 miles) race that I ran last year. Last year it was my first 10K race. I have run a few since then. But this was the first time to run a race the second year in a row. I have been running about 14 months, so I am just now starting into my second year.

The start location was changed a bit this year and we left the starting area through a new location. I assumed that this was to make the course a bit longer. It was slated as a 10K, but was actually a 9.2K last year. But as we got close to the turn around spot, I realized they had shortened the course on the other end. Though this year’s race was a bit longer, it was not much longer. Only 9.5 Km.

I am not sure where I got the information for the race, but I had the starting time written down as 7:30. I got there at 6:57 planning to sign up and take a warm up jog. After my warm up jog, I would return to my car to drop off my iPod and drink some Gatorade.

But, to my surprise, people were lined up at the starting line. I ran to the table to register and asked the registration lady when the race started. She told me 7:00. Yikes! No returning to the car. I was still working on getting my number pinned on when they started making the “Get Ready, Set….” announcements. That also meant no warm up time.

I took the start of the race really slow. I figured I could make a nice slow warm up and then run strong at the end. I ran at a pace of 10:26 per mile to the turn around and then 9:43 coming back. I sped up considerably, but I could have done better. I did not turn on my brain until I was 6 Km. into the run.

There was a lady ahead of me the whole race who I used as a pace setter. When I finally got my brain in gear, I started working to overtake her. It took a while, but I was able to do it with about 1/2 Km. left in the run. I passed several other people at the end as well.

I could have run faster had I been thinking about the distance and the fact that it really was a race. Because I did not get a chance to warm up I really treated it as just a regular weekly run. I wanted to really blow away my time from last year. I actually ran 2 seconds slower per mile as my overall pace from last year.

I did learn something this morning though. There was also a walk that coincided with the race. I have been involved with several races like this. The walk is shorter than the run and you have walkers coming back across the finish line at the same time as the runners. There were several walkers that I saw who were spraying water on each other or generally goofing around. In the process they were jumping back and forth causing runners to have to avoid them and throwing runners off their strides. Runners who were pretty worn out by this time. I learned to give them wide berth and try to avoid running near the walkers. Plus they line up 4 or 5 wide and take up the whole lane on the road that is designated for the race causing the runners who want to pass to have to veer out into traffic. Not good. Avoid walkers at all costs.

I am not saying they should not be there. They are at least getting out and getting some exercise. But, I know they won’t be considerate of me, so I must watch out for myself.

Even with the frustration of arriving really late, I had a good run. I just wished I was more in the right mindset to have made it a record run for that course.

Running for entertainment

Yesterday I went out for an 8 mile run. I was plagued a little trying to get out the door. I ended up starting almost 2 hours later than I wanted. That meant the temperature had rised from 75 degrees to 81.

Part of the difficulty was that I have not used my CamelBak in about 3 weeks, so there was stuff growing in the tube. I could not get it washed out before I left. My run was pretty dependent on having the big fanny pack. I ended up with another pack. Of course there was no water with the optional pack. I forgot to grab a gel pack and money for water on the road.

It was supposed to be an 8 mile run that I was hoping to extend if I felt good. But, 7 miles without water did me in.

I recorded a lot of stuff with my new mic. I will feature some of it on the podcast here at My Thought Spot. Some will be sent to 2 other podcasters. I will mention if they get played and where you can hear them if you’d like.

I also listened to several podcasts during the run.

The run was supposed to be an entertainment adventure. I was more interested in having fun listening to podcasts and doing some recording more so than speed or distance.

Did I have fun? You bet! It was a great run for that.

I got a new mic!

I was browsing through the hi-fi section of one of our local specialty stores today. I had been lamenting the fact that my microphones that I purchased from Giant Squid Audio Lab have not yet arrived. This weekend marks 6 weeks since I ordered them. It took him over a week to get them in the mail. Therefore, I have really only been waiting less than 5 weeks for them to get here.

Back to the specialty store. I was browsing through the aisles when my eyes spotted just the deal. This would be the perfect “tide me over” until my good mics arrive. Hanging on a bubble pack card in the computer section of Wal-Mart was a $2.50 lapel mic. Score!

I figured, for that price I could afford to take a chance that it was junk. On the other hand it had to be better than the built in mic on my iRiver.

I did some recording on it today and think it sounds pretty good. I will include some of the audio in this week’s podcast for you to hear. I am going to take it on an 8 mile run in the morning and grab some audio from the road as well.

It is very sensitive and picks up all noise as if everything were right on top of the mic. So it is not very good for interviews in a noisy environment. On the other hand, for sound seeing, it seems to be about perfect.
