This is a sermon I preached this weekend in Kentucky. The pastor is a man that went to the same high school as I. He was a few years older than me and we really did not get to know one another as friends until many years after we had both moved away from Texas.

There was a missionary to Togo, West Africa in the service. She is a nurse who works with a hospital in Togo as well as many other hospitals through her mission agency as a leadership counselor. I refer to her several times in the message.

I wanted to put this up here because a friend recently asked me how a church can be a blessing to their missionaries. This is just a small part of what I want to tell her, but it is a good introduction to what I have to say. Maybe I will write a series of posts and share the ideas I have with you as I share them with her.

We were privileged to hear the King of Spain, in person, give a speech in Pensacola, Florida. Pensacola claims the distinction of being the first European settlement in North America. The King and Queen of Spain came to town to participate in the activities for the celebration of Pensacola’s 450th anniversary.

I recorded the speech by the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, and his Highness, King Juan Carlos I.

Of course the audio is not perfect, but I am glad I got what I did and am able to preserve it. A very neat memory.

Interesting side note. I saw several people carrying around Greek flags and signs printed in Greek. Queen Sofia is from Greece.

I heard an excellent sermon on gluttony yesterday. It is not something you often hear preached. The man who preached it is not a pastor, but a medical doctor. I have known Dr. Emmett Manley for about 8 years. I have heard him speak on just a couple of occasions.

Outside of the content of his message, which you can listen to below, he had an excellent stage presentation. He finished his sermon at exactly the minute he was supposed to. I wished all preachers would learn to do the same. While I realize that not every sermon needs a time limit, when you are in a conference and trying to keep a specific schedule, it helps no one for you to steal time from the next speaker.

He also had probably 6 pages of notes. I was sitting so that I could see when he flipped from one page to the next. He had a very detailed outline, but you would never know that he was reading from such copious notes.

I don’t put this here because I have become a health nut. I just think that it is very well presented from a Biblical perspective and this is applicable to more than just food.

He is speaking to a room full of preachers and missionaries. Well more than half the group was more than “a little” overweight.

I took my recorder on a bike ride with me yesterday. I talk about the city where we live a little bit and about some of the subdivisions I ride in. I also take a little jaunt into a village outside of town.

The original recording was almost 1 hour 30 minutes long. I cut it down to about half that length. There are some sections with just car sounds to give you an idea of how much traffic I had to cross on a couple of occasions. For that reason, I don’t know if this is a good thing to listen to while you are out running. You might think there are cars around you that are just in your headphones.

This is one of my final bike rides here in Merida. We are packing up and leaving in less than a week. I tried to give you an idea of some of the little villages and sections of town I ride and run through on a regular basis.

The podcast I mentioned at the end is American Talk USA. Visit Joe and give his show a listen.

Enjoy!
