Better Google ranking

A couple of months back I gave a list of podcasts that I broke down into 5 Podcast Categories. That posting was inspired by a group writing project that was being sponsored by Darren at ProBlogger.net. It garnered a lot of links back to My Thought Spot. So much so that my Google page ranking went from 2 to 4. For those who may not understand that, it basically means that Google now sees MTS as an important website when returning search results. If you do a search for something that I have blogged, I am more likely to show up towards the top of all the search results.

This month Darren is hosting another writing project that has the theme of blogging tips. This will probably generate a lot of links back to My Thought Spot. This is a good thing since Google ranking is based on the links you have coming into your blog. Those links can be external coming in, or internal links to your own pages.

With group writing projects you are able to get a good number of incoming links. If these links come from other highly ranked blogs, that adds authority in the algorithm which can bode very well for you.

Therefore, the two main factors to rising in Google rankings is to have many links coming into your blog and then have those links be from highly ranked sites.

There are many other factors as well, but those are the two big ones.

One thing I have seen that shows a lack of understanding in how the web works is that I have read many pages that talk about people or websites, but do not give links to those sites. A link to the main page is all it takes, though a link to a specific post or page at the linked site is always more preferable (also if they have trackbacks/pingbacks turned on, you will get a link back to your site just for deep linking to a specific post.)

Get out there and link to other sites and spread the joy of helping others move up in the rankings. They may return the favor by linking back to you. If not, someone else will.

  1. I almost always put links to certain websites or stories, especially my own, since people may not have read (or remembered) the post. Sometimes I won’t include a link or not activate the link, if 1) I am in a real hurry or 2) I don’t want the linking website to know that I am talking about them but still want people to check them out.

I have no idea what my Google Ranking might be, probably not very high. I do have the Google Analytics turned on… maybe I should go check that out. Happy Linking!

  2. You are doing well. You have a ranking of 4 out of 10. Really popular blogs get up to 6 (like ProBlogger).

I use the Google Toolbar in Firefox. That has a little scale in it to tell you the ranking of each page you visit.

I find it interesting because I am obsessed with numbers. Maybe I should have become a statistician. Is the pay pretty good?

  3. about 50% of the time, you can get lots of money in statistics… however, it’s one of those professions that you have to really love to stay up to date with everything. Private consulting could make you 6 figures easily if you had the clients.

You could do some recreational statistics… you know, something to free you mind. I think the world is better place with you as a Missionary… although Excel has a Add-On pack that has some basic Statistical modeling operations… I you had data about your missionary in MX you could do some basic analysis that 1) shed a light on something you are missing or 2) Give you a firmer foot to stand on when you are trying to raise money (I think that’s deposition?).

  4. I am afraid of doing statistical analysis on my work here. I am afraid it would show I do too much stressing over just trying to live instead of productive work.

It could, however, help me with support raising (called “deputation”). Especially now that I have been here for 3 years and know more about what the work is like and can more fully explain it and become passionate about it. I think pictures of snotty nosed kids raise more money than statistics anyway.

  5. I have come through many tutorials that can help me rank my blog well on Search Engines. What i find special about your advice is to allow others to link to your site and they might consider ranking back. This is the Best Ive ever received. Thanks
